6 colorful July 4th recipes to make your party sparkle

In the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave, food is how we party.

More Americans plan to spend their Fourth of July holiday at a cookout, barbecue or picnic than plan to see fireworks or go to a parade, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual Independence Day survey. Those July 4th spreads will cost us $6.9 billion, the survey said.

So, knowing your party menu trumps fireworks, what should you serve at your Fourth fete?

Burgers, brats, chicken and ribs are all good main dishes. Salads of the leafy green and mayonnaise-based varieties are solid sides.

Desserts and drinks…now that’s where you can shine.

Add pops of color with red, white and blue strawberry cheesecake bites. Show your spirit with patriotic puffed-rice treats. Salute the flag by raising a glass of Stars and Stripes sangria.

We’ve tested these six Fourth of July recipes — amalgamations of popular online recipes — and would recommend them for any holiday celebration. They are filled with fruit and fresh flavors. They look impressive, but are easy to make. You can prepare everything ahead of time, and your kids can help. Best of all, you don’t have to turn your oven on to make a single one.

In truth, they’re probably the easiest Fourth of July recipes you’ll ever make.

Patriotic Puffed-Rice Treats

Servings: 16.

• Cooking spray

• 9 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided

• 12 cups miniature marshmallows, divided

• 9 cups puffed-rice cereal, divided

• Red and blue food coloring

1. Lightly coat a 9-by-13-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.

2. In a large saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons unsalted butter over medium heat.

3. Add 4 cups miniature marshmallows and a few drops of blue food coloring. Stir until melted.

4. Continue to add blue food coloring until mixture has reached desired hue.

5. Stir in 3 cups puffed-rice cereal and immediately transfer to pan.

6. Coat an offset spatula with cooking spray and firmly press mixture into an even layer.

7. Rinse saucepan. Repeat steps twice:

8. For second batch, do not add any food coloring

9. For third batch, add enough red food coloring to tint the marshmallow mixture dark red.

10.Let set at least 2 hours or overnight.

11. Run a small knife around edges of pan and invert loaf onto a cutting board.

12. Using a serrated knife, cut loaf into 16 slices. Or, use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out pieces.

Firework Fruit Skewers

Servings: At least 15, more depending on size of watermelon.

• 1 set of 10-inch skewers

• watermelon

• Star cookie cutter

• Blueberries

• Mini marshmallows

• Red grapes, optional

• Raspberries, optional

1. Wash fruit and sticks, set aside.

2. Slice watermelon into 1-inch slices, or to fit the width of your cookie cutter.

3. Cut out watermelon slices using your cookie cutter, set aside.

4. To assemble the skewers, slide a blueberry onto a stick. Follow with a mini marshmallow.

5. Repeat, rotating between berries and marshmallows, until there is about an inch of stick left.

6. Place a star-shaped slice of watermelon at the top, making sure the pointed stick is not exposed.

7. If desired, add red grapes or raspberries after the marshmallows to make a red, white and blue pattern on the stick.

Red, White and Blue Berry Bites

Servings: 12.

• 2 pints strawberries

• 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, at room temperature

• 1 cup whipped cream

• ½ cup powdered sugar

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• ½ cup blueberries

1. Wash and dry fruit.

2. Cut the stems from the strawberries to create a steady base.

3. Stand the strawberries upright and cut a deep “X” from the tip down. Do not cut all the way through.

4. Beat the cream cheese, whipped cream, powdered sugar and vanilla in a bowl with a hand mixer until fluffy.

5. Fill a piping bag with a star-shaped piping tip with the cream mixture. (Use a plastic bag if you don’t have a piping bag.)

6. Gently open each strawberry and pipe the cream filling inside.

7. Top each strawberry with a blueberry.

8. Chill for at least an hour and serve.

Fourth of July Trifle

Servings: 8, more depending on size of container.

• 1 pound blueberries, washed

• 17 ounces angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes

• 1 or 2 containers whipped cream, depending on taste

• 1 pound strawberries, washed and sliced

Preparation: 1. In a Mason jar or clear plastic cup, layer blueberries, cake, whipped cream and strawberry slices.

2. Repeat until container is nearly full and then top with a dollop of cream.

3. Assemble and serve trifles on the same day. Refrigerate until ready to eat.

Flag Nosh Board

Servings: 12.

• 1½ cups blueberries

• 2 cups raspberries

• 3 cups yogurt-covered pretzels (or white chocolate-covered)

• 2 cups strawberries, cut in quarters

• 2½ cups mini marshmallows

• 2 cups red grapes

Note: The amount of ingredients will vary depending on size of serving tray.

1. Wash and dry fruit, set aside.

2. To assemble, use a rectangular serving tray.

3. Place blueberries in a small container, and place it in the top left corner of the tray. Then, lay out the ingredients, rotating between red and white, to represent the flag stripes.

Stars and Stripes Sangria

Servings: 6.

• 1 bottle white wine, such as chardonnay

• 3 ounces elderflower liqueur, such as Thatcher's or St-Germain

• 2 cups blueberries, washed

• 2 cups strawberries, washed and quartered

• 3-4 Granny Smith apples

• 12 ounces sparkling water

• Ice

1. Combine wine, liqueur, blueberries and strawberries in a large pitcher.

2. To make stars, slice the apples into ¼-inch pieces and use a star-shaped cookie cutter.

3. Add the apple stars to the mixture and keep the cutouts for garnish.

4. Chill for at least four hours.

5. Just before serving sangria, add sparkling water.

6. Serve in a tall glass with ice and garnish with an apple star cutout.

4th of July Hairstyles — Easy Braids & Ponytails For Your Backyard BBQ

Hot weather hair can sometimes be a challenge, but with so many celeb-inspired styles out there, you can rock any look this summer by following these expert tips.

Braids, waves and ponytails are perfect for summer — I especially love styles that get the hair out of my face and off my neck as temps start to rise. Find out how to do a crown braid and a jazzed up ponytail with celebrity hairstylist tips below!

Celebrity hairstylist and MIZANI Global Artistic Director Cesar Ramirez created this sultry look on LaLa Anthony on June 22. He told us:

“I love doing ponytails on LaLa because she’s one of the few that can wear a ponytail and feel confident and sexy. But sometimes the same ponytail can get boring — we wanted to add a little something to spice it up this time. So we collaborated on a piece of “hair jewelry”.

I always carry metal chains, velvet fabric, leather rope and random things I pick up from trimming shops. They’re usually things that inspire me, and you never know when they will come to good use. [Her Balmain dress] was a gorgeous, dark gold color and simple enough to pair with my “hair jewelry”.”

Sarah Hyland‘s gorgeous look is just like the crown braid on the menu at Dream Dry, a blow dry bar in New York and Chicago. Here’s how to get a similar look at home from lead stylist Sonia David:

“Bianca is the ultimate crown braid, that goes from day to night. Easily achieve this look by separating your hair into two parts. Create a braid on each side and secure them in place with hair ties. Wrap one braid around the front of your crown securing in place with bobby pins. Then, wrap the second braids in the opposite direction securing with bobby pins as well. Finish your look by gently separating pieces of the braid for a relaxed, bohemian chic vibe.”

To keep your hair healthy in the summer sun, éprouvage Global Stylist Anna Lyles recommends wearing a hat. “Protect your scalp from harsh UV rays by covering up. Breathable hat materials are ideal to keep your scalp dry and happy.” Also, “Drink lots of water — maintain optimum scalp health by keeping your body hydrated from the inside out.”

Anna continues: “Don’t be rough on knots and tangles from a day at the beach — use a leave-in conditioner such as éprouvage Replenishing Leave-In Conditioner and wide-toothed comb to gently detangle hair.”

Are you going to use these summer hairstyling tips and tricks?

Taylor Swift Didn't Throw a Fourth of July Party, So Her Squad Scattered: How the Singer's Friends Spent the Holiday Without Her

This year's Fourth of July was another sort of Independence Day for Taylor Swift 's coterie of pals.

As far as anyone's been able to tell, the singer opted for a far more low-key holiday than usual this year and did not throw the picture-perfect, wish-we-were-there party we've grown accustomed to her throwing at her oceanfront estate in Rhode Island. It's possible that Taylor was there, as her parents, Andrea and Scott, were photographed in town near the house, but she did not advertise if she was.

The lack of festivities didn't come as a huge shock for multiple reasons: First of all, Swift has been operating decidedly under the radar for months now, barely being seen let alone sharing her world on Instagram for all to savor. Hosting a big bash would have signaled a return to the spotlight of sorts, and she doesn't seem to be ready for that yet.

Moreover, such a move wouldn't fit in with her revamped approach to romance.

Swift has been quietly dating British actor Joe Alwyn, jetting back and forth from London to see him, and let's just say that Taylor's attempt at adding a new boyfriend to the 4th of July mix kinda backfired last year.

So without one massive home to gather at, that meant Swift's squad was on its own—and it appears that, without the red, white and blue slide holding them together, they scattered to the four winds for the 4th.

End of an era or just life and supermodel schedules getting in the way this summer? Here's where the pals who've patriotically partied with Swift in recent years spent the holiday in 2017:

Abigail Anderson, Swift's childhood best friend who's been pretty busy lately planning her wedding, celebrated at Frisky Frog's in Nashville with fiancé Matt Lucier, where the festivities appeared to include selfie-snapping and Moscow mules.

Then a legion of the squad was lost to France, where Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week is underway: Karlie Kloss, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Cara Delevingne(both she and Karlie made the scene at Chez Taylor in 2016) are all there.

Una publicación compartida de Karlie Kloss (@karliekloss) el

Fellow 2016 reveler Gigi Hadid got fans all hot and bothered with a shirtless pic of Zayn Malik holding a puppy that she posted to her Instagram story over the weekend, and then she appeared to be on the go via private jet. "traveling light n bright," she wrote, highlighting her hot-pink Max Mara bag.

Ryan Reynolds, who was one tank top shy of stealing the entire show with the expression on his face in that infamous couples' pic last year, is off shooting Deadpool 2 in Vancouver, so it's unclear if he was even free to celebrate with his wife and kids. ("I had no idea somebody was taking a photo. Therefore I was resting comfortably in my persona of a man whose soul is visibly exiting this earth," Reynolds handily explained last year's his resting bemused face to EW.)

Blake Lively, meanwhile, may have gotten her inflatable slide fix at a family-friendly carnival, where she snapped a July 4 pic in front of a pretty impressive-looking bouncy house.

Una publicación compartida de Blake Lively (@blakelively) el

Martha Hunt also went the carnival route, sharing a video of fireworks going off above a lit-up Ferris wheel.

Uzo Aduba, who enjoyed the Swift scene last year, is off in paradise somewhere on a beach vacation—looking at the unidentified scenery, Instagram commenters have speculated Mallorca and Brazil (though it could also be Hawaii...).

Este, Alana and Danielle Haim have been busy counting down to their July 9 show in London, and tonight in New York they're hosting a screening for fans of Valentine, a short film shot late last year while they were working on their new album by none other than Paul Thomas Anderson. "Fight Song" singer Rachel Platten, also a guest last summer, spent this holiday weekend with a different set of gal pals.

No word yet on how Ruby Rose spent the 4th, but she's been happily keeping company with The Veronicas' Jessica Origliasso and recently credited her busy schedule for not being up on the latest gossip.

"I don't have a lot of downtime and I think that's when people have difficulties because they sort of feel like their private life is changed. Me, I'm always on a set," the model-actress, who's in Pitch Perfect 3, told Australia's Daily Telegraph last month. "We're living in a bit of a bubble.'"

We do know that Rose visited Los Angeles' newest celebrity hot spot, the Museum of Ice Cream, a few weeks ago.

As for some of the guests from years past...

Jaime King, whose son counts Taylor as his godmother, watched fireworks with her family. Lena Dunham wished her fans a happy Fourth from New York, showing off her patriotic manicure and being sure to crack wise about her see-through top and skirt, a "touch of inappropriate under to outer garment ratio."

And Emma Stone, who attended Swift's inaugural Fourth of July bash in 2014 but has since drifted out of the fold, was most recently photographed last Friday in La La Land after a pilates class.

Meanwhile, Tom Hiddleston is British, so perhaps he forgot all about the Fourth of July this year.

As for Taylor herself, she recently emerged from her self-imposed solitude to congratulate NBA star Russell Westbrook on being named MVP this year, and new music is in the works.

"She has been entirely focused on that and not much else," a source recently told E! News. Much less party planning.

Star-Spangled Skies: Fireworks at Disneyland - Courtesy of D23

The Fourth of July is upon us—that most American of holidays, celebrating the bravery of our Founding Fathers and the generations after who fought for our continued freedom. And nothing says “Fourth of July” quite like a magnificent display of fireworks! Disneyland Park has cornered the market for decades on firework displays, culminating with Disneyland Forever, their newest spectacular in honor of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration.

It all started in 1956 (just one year after the Park’s opening) when Walt Disney first dazzled nighttime guests with a fireworks display, entitled Fantasy In the Sky. Back then, firework fuses were lit by very steady hand. But by the 1960s, an electronic system was created to launch the shells into the air… and shortly thereafter, the increasingly popular shows were synchronized to music. Tinker Bell’s iconic “flight” over Sleeping Beauty Castle was first added in 1961, and other characters (including Dumbo and Mary Poppins) followed.

Quintessential displays over the years have included Believe … There’s Magic in the Stars, which fused storytelling with innovative pyrotechnic effects; the breathtaking Christmas-themed Believe… In Holiday Magic; the 50th anniversary Remember… Dreams Come True; the enchanting production Magical (which brought Dumbo back to the skies above the Castle); and last year’s re-invented Fantasy In The Sky. And it all leads up to the new Disneyland Forever, which surrounds audiences with magic like never before!

Whether watching from Main Street, U.S.A., it’s a small world, the Rivers of America, or even within sight of the Matterhorn, each guest has a different experience of Disneyland Forever—as every location comes to life with unique combinations of color and light. The show features sequences themed after timeless films like Mary Poppins, Frozen, and The Lion King, and the pyrotechnics join with amazing projection mapping technology to immerse guests into the Disney tales that surround them. Other special effects include dozens of inflatable units and moving window “actuators” that make Main Street, U.S.A. truly come alive. And don’t forget the show’s brand-new musical score! It includes a very special closing theme, “A Kiss Goodnight,” written by Disney Legend Richard M. Sherman and performed by Broadway’s original Mary Poppins, Ashley Brown.

Disneyland Forever is the latest (and greatest!) in a long line of memorable fireworks spectaculars at Disneyland Park—and if you’re visiting this coming Fourth of July, take note: Following that evening’s performance, for one night only, guests will enjoy a patriotic pyrotechnic grand finale to celebrate America’s birthday!
