EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT STAR WARS RESISTANCE, A NEW ANIMATED SERIES COMING TO DISNEY CHANNEL

Disney Channel is bringing us back to a galaxy far, far away! We found out this week that production has begun for Star Wars Resistance, an all-new animated series that explores the events prior to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We will be able to follow the adventures of Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot recruited by the Resistance for a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order, when the series premieres this fall on Disney Channel in the United States (and thereafter, on Disney XD and around the world)!

Our fave droid BB-8 will be joined by ace pilots, new characters, and appearances by some of our favorite Star Wars icons—including Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, who will be voiced by Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, who play the roles in the live-action films.. The voice cast also includes Christopher Sean, Suzie McGrath, Scott Lawrence, Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener, Donald Faison, Bobby Moynihan (DuckTales), Jim Rash, and Rachel Butera.

Star Wars Resistance was created by legendary Lucasfilm Animation veteran Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), executive-produced by Athena Portillo (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), Justin Ridge (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), and Brandon Auman, and art-directed by Amy Beth Christenson (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels). With this group of talent, we’ve got a good feeling about this!

Filoni said about the inspiration behind the story:

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots. My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

We can’t wait to see this innovative take on Star Wars! Marc Buhaj, senior vice president of programming general manager at Disney XD, added:

“Our colleagues at Lucasfilm have created a compelling narrative for an untold moment in the Star Wars galaxy, and we are excited to partner with them again on this new original series. Star Wars Resistance will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humor, and both new and familiar characters.”

Are you ready to jump into hyperspace? We sure will be when Star Wars Resistance comes to Disney Channel and Disney XD this fall!

‘Stuck In the Middle’ To End After 3 Seasons On Disney Channel, Star Jenna Ortega Joins ABC Pilot ‘Man Of the House’

EXCLUSIVE: Stuck in the Middle star Jenna Ortega has been cast in a lead role opposite Alyson Hannigan and Leslie Bibb in Man of the House, ABC’s multi-camera hybrid family comedy pilot from Gail Berman’s The Jackal Group, ABC Studios and Scandal star Kerry Washington’s studio-based Simpson Street.

Ortega is segueing to Man Of the House from another multi-camera comedy, Disney Channel’s Stuck In the Middle, which wrapped production on its third season last week. It will be the series’ last season, Deadline has learned. The 22-episode third and final season of Stuck In the Middle will begin airing this summer. The series has produced 59 episodes in total.

Ortega, who plays the lead in Stuck In the Middle, hinted at the comedy coming to an end with tearful messages on Twitter and Instagram at the wrap of production last week.

Stuck in the Middle, from executive producer Linda Videtti Figueiredo, stars Ortega as a middle child, Harley Diaz, in a household bustling with nine people – two parents and seven kids – each with distinctive personalities and conflicting schedules. It also stars Isaak Presley as Ethan, Ronni Hawk as Rachel, Kayla Maisonet as Georgie, Nicolas Bechtel as Lewie, Malachi Barton as Beast, Ariana Greenblatt as Daphne, Cerina Vincent as Suzy and Joe Nieves as Tom.

The Stuck In the Middle cast has been lining up high-profile new gigs. Hawk left early in the production of Season 3; she has a new series on Netflix, On My Block. Greenblatt has a major role in the upcoming Disney feature The One and Only Ivan.

Written by Vijal Patel and Frank Pines inspired by Pines’ life and directed by Richie Keen, Man of the House revolves around two recently divorced sisters — Jessie (Hannigan) and Charli (Bibb) — who decide to move in together to raise their kids under one roof. The oldest kid and only son is left to figure out what manhood means in a world where he’s now completely surrounded by females.

Ortega will play Elena, Charli’s (Bibb) fifteen-year-old daughter, a beautiful and mean spirited only child, who doesn’t adjust well to living with her cousins.

Patel and Pines executive produce with Gail Berman and Joe Earley via the Jackal Group as well as Kerry Washington via Simpson Street.

In addition to her starring turn on Stuck in the Middle, Ortega has recurred as Young Jane on the CW dramedy Jane the Virgin. Ortega is repped by CAA and Gilbertson Entertainment.

Disney Channel Sets ‘Fast Layne’, Live-Action Series From ‘Zeke And Luther’ Duo

EXCLUSIVE: Disney Channel has greenlighted Fast Layne, a live-ation limited series from executive producers Matt Dearborn and Tom Burkhard. Production is under way on the action-comedy from Lakeshore Productions starring The Young and the Restless actress Sophie Pollono. Created by Travis Braun, it’s set for a 2018 launch.

Twelve-year-old overachiever Layne (Pollono) finds her orderly life thrown into a tailspin when she discovers a sophisticated talking car named V.I.N. hidden in an abandoned shed. With the help of her eccentric neighbor, Zora (Sofia Rosinsky, right), Layne embarks on a high-speed adventure filled with bad guys, secret agents and other surprises to unlock the mystery behind V.I.N.’s creation.

Brandon Rossel plays Cody, a cute boy at Layne’s school with a talent for fixing cars, and Winslow Fegley is Mel, Layne’s nosy younger cousin who is determined to uncover her secret.

Braun (Vampirina) will serve as co-executive producer, and Hasraf Dulull will direct the first two episodes.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Matt, Tom and Travis on this exciting, action-packed journey that showcases two unlikely friends in the driver’s seat of a sentient, self-driving car,” said Adam Bonnett, EVP Original Programming at Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “This limited series allows our audience to go an adventure with these kids with nonstop action, comedy and mystery in a unique genre they haven’t experienced before on Disney Channel.”

Fast Layne is the latest new series for Disney Channel, which last month announced a pair of kid-targeted animated series: Amphibia, a comedy about a girl who gets transported to the titular world, and The Owl House, a horror comedy about a teenage human girl who stumbles upon a portal to the Demon Realm. It also ordered a fourth season of Disney TVA’s Star vs. the Forces of Evil, from creator/executive producer Daron Nefcy.

The Disney Channel Is Getting Its First Gay Main Character On ‘Andi Mack’

For the first time in the network’s history, the Disney Channel will feature a character’s coming out journey. Andi Mack, a teen dramedy, follows the title character (played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and her friends on their coming-of-age journey, starting with Mack’s discovery that the woman she’s always known as her sister is actually her mother. One friend, 13-year-old Cyrus (played by Joshua Rash, who is 15) will discover he has feelings for a boy, beginning a period of accepting himself as gay.

According to Deadline, creator Terri Minsky worked with child development experts in writing the arc “to ensure the story arc is age-appropriate and respectful.” The episode has been screened to organizations including GLAAD, PFLAG and The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, who praised the show.

With more and more young people coming out as LGBTQ, “Andi Mack” is reflecting the lives and lived experiences of so many LGBTQ youth around the country,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “Television reflects the real life world and today that includes LGBTQ youth who deserve to see their lives depicted on their favorite shows. Disney has been a leader in LGBTQ inclusion and there are so many young people who will be excited to see Cyrus’ story unfold.”

While Disney has, in recent years, embraced and included gay side characters — lesbian co-parents on Good Luck Charlie, a same-gender kiss on Star vs. the Forces of Evil — this will be the network’s first-ever gay main character and first storyline dedicated to coming out.

DisneyVersary 2017 — Disney releases DisneyNow, a new app that combines live TV, on-demand, games and music

Disney’s streaming service may still be years away, but the company this week has launched a new app for streaming Disney’s series, Disney Channel movies, live TV and music all under one roof, with the release of DisneyNow. The app is designed to consolidate Disney’s existing “Watch” streaming apps into one, including Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior and Radio Disney.

That suite of TV apps, aimed at kids 2 to 14 years old, have been downloaded over 40 million times since 2012, the company says. To some extent, it made sense to keep them as separate properties – after all, what a 2-year old wants to watch will be very different from a young teenager.

But times are changing. While it made sense for each property to have its own space on linear TV, it’s more cumbersome to have multiple apps installed on our devices for access to content from a single provider.

To address this problem, Disney has added personalization features within the new DisneyNow app so kids (or parents) can customize the app to their programming interests. In addition, there’s a “Disney Junior Only” mode that parents can enable if they want to keep the app focused on preschool-appropriate programming.

What’s also interesting about the new app is that it gives you an idea of how Disney’s forthcoming streaming service may work.

In DisneyNow, for example, each user can set up a profile for themselves, and select from over 180 Disney Emoji avatar character poses to associate with their account. Kids can then customize their setup by choosing their favorite characters and shows, and then receive recommendations about what to watch next.

The app will also remember where users left off, so they can resume watching the next time they log in.

And like Disney’s upcoming streaming service has planned, DisneyNow app offers a combination of content – not just shows and movies. There are also games, music, and special performances available, too.

The app will include the ability to watch live, linear TV channels, as well as on-demand, in-season TV shows from its networks, like: “Andi Mack,” “Raven’s Home,” “Bizaardvark,” “Stuck in the Middle,” “Tangled: The Series”; Disney Junior’s “Vampirina,” “Elena of Avalor,” “Mickey and the Roadster Racers,” “The Lion Guard,” “Puppy Dog Pals” and “PJ Masks”; and Disney XD’s “DuckTales,” “Star Wars Rebels,” “Walk the Prank,” “MECH-X4” and “Milo Murphy’s Law.”

A selection of Disney Channel TV movies, curated from over 100 titles, will also be available, along with over 60 games featuring Disney characters, like the “DuckTales” adventure game “Duckburg Quest,” Princess Elena of Avalor in “Flight of the Jaquins” and the Villain Kids in the “Descendants 2 Wicked Style” activity.

Disney says it will release new games to the platform on a monthly basis.

Radio Disney performances and in-studio appearances will be added to this app, as well, including those from Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Camila Cabello, and others. The app is ad-supported via sponsorships, traditional or interactive TV commercials and sweepstakes, as there’s no subscription fee to use it.

However, DisneyNow is not an over-the-top streaming service, like the one Disney has planned for its 2019 release, nor will it include any theatrical movies, like those from big brands such as Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars. Those are being saved for Disney’s big Netflix competitor. (It does have sections for Marvel and Star Wars though, for their TV cartoon series.)

While some content in DisneyNow available for free, to watch the full lineup, users will need to authenticate using their pay TV credentials from a supported cable, satellite or digital programming distributor.

The good news for cord cutters is that DisneyNow does work with your YouTube TV, PlayStation Vue, DirecTV Now, or Hulu credentials.

Of course, you could just watch Disney via those streaming apps’, but it’s better to install the DisneyNow app for the kids, so they don’t have to stumble through adult programming to find their favorite shows.

DisneyNow is a free download on iOS, Apple TV, Android, Fire tablets, and Roku. A version for Fire TV, Android TV and the web will arrive next year.
